The Wellness Home Trend, and What It Actually Means for How You Heat Your House
Somewhere in the last few years, the way people talk about their homes changed. The conversation used to be about square footage, storage and resale value. Now it is about light, texture, air, quiet and the feeling of a room at seven o'clock on a dark evening. Spa-inspired bathrooms and calming, low-stimulation interiors have gone from a niche design interest to one of the defining home trends of the decade.
What is interesting, and what almost nobody writes about, is that this trend has a heating problem buried inside it. You can specify the limewash walls, the fluted oak, the freestanding bath and the dimmable lighting, and then spoil the whole thing with a white steel panel bolted to the wall and a floor that is cold from October to April.
What the wellness home trend is really about
It helps to be precise here, because "wellness" has been stretched to cover everything from a scented candle to a £40,000 basement spa. Strip the marketing away and the trend is about a small number of consistent ideas.
Sensory comfort over visual impact. The wellness home is designed around how it feels to be in, not how it photographs. Warmth, softness underfoot, controlled sound, gentle light. It is a shift from rooms you look at to rooms you occupy.
Fewer objects, more calm. Calming interiors are usually uncluttered interiors. Anything that does not need to be visible is hidden, built in or removed entirely. That instinct extends to services and equipment as much as to ornaments.
Restorative zones rather than dedicated rooms. Most people do not have a spare room to convert into a sauna. What they do have is a bathroom, an ensuite, a garden room or a landing that can be given over to a slower, quieter purpose.
Air quality and health as design criteria. Ventilation, humidity, dust and allergens have moved from the technical annexe of a project into the main brief. Homeowners are asking about them unprompted, which was not the case ten years ago.
That being said, the trend does have a slightly precious side to it, and it is worth naming. A lot of wellness interiors are photographed rather than lived in, and there is a real risk of spending heavily on the appearance of calm rather than the substance of it. The homes that actually work are the ones where the comfort is structural, built into the fabric of the space rather than styled on top of it.
Which brings us to the floor.

Why every spa on earth heats from the ground up
Walk into any decent spa, hotel bathroom or high-end treatment room and you will not find radiators. You will find warm stone, warm tile, and warm concrete. This is not a coincidence or a luxury flourish. Radiant floor heat is the standard in spa and wellness design for a handful of reasons that hold up just as well in a semi in Milton Keynes as they do in a hotel in the Alps.
It heats people, not air. Radiant heat warms the surfaces and bodies in a room directly, rather than heating a column of air and hoping it circulates. The result is a room that feels comfortable at a lower air temperature, which is precisely the sensation of a spa: warm, but not stuffy.
It works from the feet up. Thermal comfort is disproportionately about your feet. This is why a room at 20 degrees with a cold tile floor feels cold, and the same room with a warm floor feels genuinely pleasant. If you are designing for barefoot use, and a wellness space almost always is, the floor is the whole game.
It moves less dust around. Radiators work by convection, which means they are constantly pushing air, and whatever is in that air, around the room. Underfloor heating does far less of this, which is one reason it comes up so often in conversations about underfloor heating and allergy sufferers. It disappears. No panels, no pipework, no dead wall space, no compromise on where the bath or the bench or the plants go. In an interior style defined by what has been taken away, a heating system you cannot see is not a small detail.
The heat is even. No hot spot by the radiator and cold corner by the window. The temperature is consistent across the room, which is a large part of why these spaces feel settled rather than draughty.
The bathroom is where this lands hardest
If the wellness home has a spiritual centre, it is the bathroom. Spa-inspired bathrooms have been near the top of every trend list for years now, and the ingredients are fairly settled: large-format stone or porcelain, deep baths, walk-in showers, muted palettes, warm timber, plenty of texture.
Here is the thing about all of those materials. They are cold. Stone, porcelain and polished concrete are chosen precisely because they are dense and hard and hold their surface, and that same density makes them feel icy underfoot in a British winter. The single most common experience in a beautifully designed bathroom is stepping out of a hot shower and flinching.
Heated floors solve that, and the effect is out of all proportion to the cost of the system. A warm tiled floor changes the character of a bathroom from a functional room you pass through quickly into somewhere you are willing to spend time. It also does something practical: warm floors dry faster, which means less standing water, less lingering damp and fewer of the problems that come with a room that never quite dries out.
Mind you, the same logic applies well beyond the bathroom. Kitchens with large tiled or stone floors have exactly the same issue, which is why heating comes up so often during a kitchen renovation. So do garden rooms and conservatories, which are increasingly being used as yoga spaces, reading rooms and home studios rather than storage for garden furniture. If that is the plan, the difference between a conservatory and a garden room is worth understanding before anything is built, because the two behave very differently once you try to keep them warm.

The catch, and there is one
None of this makes underfloor heating an automatic yes, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
It is a floor-up decision, so timing is everything. The system sits under your floor covering. That makes it straightforward during a renovation, a new build or a bathroom refit, and considerably more disruptive as a standalone job in a room you finished last year. If a project is on the horizon, that is the moment to decide, not afterwards.
Your floor finish is part of the system, not a separate choice. Not every covering conducts heat well. Thick carpet and heavy underlay in particular can insulate the warmth away from the room, which is what the TOG rating measures. Stone, porcelain and tile are the natural fits, but plenty of engineered wood and vinyl works well too. It is worth going through the flooring options that actually suit underfloor heating with someone before you fall in love with a sample.
Running costs need honest numbers, not vibes. This is where a lot of homeowners get stuck, usually because they have heard a confident opinion from someone who has never had it. The realistic answer depends on room size, insulation, floor covering and how you control it, and it is genuinely worth reading a proper breakdown of underfloor heating running costs and efficiency rather than guessing. Zoned, timed control in the rooms that benefit most is usually a more sensible starting point than heating the entire house this way.
Response time behaves differently. Underfloor systems warm gently and hold their heat rather than blasting a room and cooling quickly. Once you set it on a schedule this is a benefit, and it is a large part of why the warmth feels so even. Set it like a radiator and expect it to react in five minutes, though, and you will be disappointed.
Where to start if any of this sounds like your house
The useful question is not "should I install underfloor heating", it is "which rooms in this house am I trying to make genuinely comfortable, and when am I next opening up the floor". For most people the honest answer is the bathroom first, the kitchen second, and any garden room or extension at the point it is being built.
Start with the room where you notice the cold most and where you would most like to slow down. Check what is going under it and what is going on top of it. Then get a realistic figure for that specific space rather than a national average, because the numbers vary enormously between a 4m² ensuite and an open-plan kitchen.
The wellness home trend gets written about as an aesthetic, and it largely is one. Underneath the limewash and the linen, though, it is really a set of decisions about how a room feels to be in, and very few of those decisions are as quietly effective as making the floor warm. It is not the part anyone photographs. It is the part everyone notices.
